5.

Formerly when the temptation to drink came upon me I

took drugs, veronal and so on, in the belief that they acted as

an antidote. It is possible that they may have aggravated the

condition induced by drink. I have taken no drugs for a long time

past.

6. I would add that formerly, when I drank to excess, I

never became, to outward seeming, intoxicated; and, if I had

made no attempt to place a check upon myself, the Government

would never have been in a position to prefer a charge of drunken-

ness against me. The periods of abstinence which precede each

lapee aggravate, I think, my condition of incapacity when the

lapse comes.

7.

I do not excuse myself. The thing is to me in the

nature of a disease, But the degree of success which I have

already attained in checking the habit makes me confident that

eventually I will, overcome all temptation to take alcohol.

8. I may add one further point. The amount and the quali-

ty of my work has not suffered in any way.

9.

At any investigation that the Government may think fit

to hold I propose to call witness in regard to my statement that

I an ordinarily a total abstainer.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient servant,

(ad) W. Bowen-Rowlands.
